Mickey Carroll, one of the last surviving actors who played a Munchkin in the Judy Garland classic The Wizard of Oz, has passed away. He was 89 and died after a period of declining health, a BBC report said.
In keeping with Carroll's own background, his was a multi-talented resident of Munchkinland. He was a Munchkinland town crier, a Munchkin soldier and a Munchkin Fiddler. It was as the last of these that Carroll earned recognition for saying the famous line, "Follow the yellow brick road".
The Wizard of Oz (1939) was the second and last film that Carroll is credited with appearing in. The othermovie was the 1938 Warner Brother's musical Gold Diggers in Paris that starred Rudy Vallee, Rosemary Lane and was directed by Busby Berkeley.
Mickey Carroll was born on July 8, 1919 to Italian immigrant parents. As a child he took dance lessons at the St. Louis Fox Theater. He later worked in vaudeville as a singer and dancer and he acted in radio advertisements and plays. In some of the latter his co-stars included George Burns, Gracie Allen, Jack Benny and Al Jolson. He also worked as a nightclub emcee, in which capacity he performed at some of Al Capone's clubs in Chicago. Carroll's other appearances included being the opening act for Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman in cross-country appearances during their Presidential campaigns.
In 2007 Carroll received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with six other actors who played Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz. Although the classic status the film achieved contributed greatly to Carroll's fame, he was modest about his contribution to it.
"It's not me, it's the movie," he is quoted as saying. "When they see me, they think of their childhood, and it makes them smile."
The following announcement of Mickey Carroll's death was published on his website.
We are very sad to inform everyone that on the morning of May 7, 2009, St. Louisan Mickey Carroll, child star and entertainer, beloved Munchkin soldier, violinist, and proclaimer of the famous line: "Follow the yellow brick road!" passed away peacefully after a period of declining health. Mickey would have been 90 on July 8th, 2009.
Mickey, a lifelong resident of St. Louis, Missouri, spent his retirement years contributing to fund-raisers for the benefit of policemen, their families, and any and all causes related to children, such as the St. Louis Children's Hospital, where he often visited to entertain and cheer the children.

NIGERIAN IDOL WINNER TO EMERGE THIS WEEKEND
For the first time in the history of reality TV in Nigeria, two ladies- Yeka Onka and Naomi Mac are the final two contestants slugging it out for the final prize And this Sunday March 27, 2011, a winner in the first season of Nigeria’s biggest music talent show ever!.
The TV reality show which has been the talk of the town since kicking off in November 2011 is finally coming to an end this Sunday and the
producers are seeing to it that the grand finale is a remarkable one for TV viewers in Nigeria, UK and America.
Already, the evicted 11 finalists- Ola, Nina, Chito, AJ, Tonii, George, Zoe, Alex, Glory, Bibi and Emmanuel are on camp at the Dream studios rehearsing for the final show and recording a team song with Naomi Mac and Yeka Onka
The winner will be announced at a star-studded event holding at the Dream studios in the presence of select key guests which will include
the crème de la crème of the entertainment industry, sponsors of Nigerian Idol and of course friends and relatives of the final contestants.
Aside the fact that fast rising stars like Praiz and Retta will perform; there promises to be performances from two special A list artistes- an international act and a Nigerian superstar.
The show which debuted on Sunday November 21, 2011 has gone through raw auditions to theatre auditions to workshop phase, to top50 phase, to the top 10 phase; wild card twist to top 13 phase to evictions!
“Numerous talents came for raw auditions; and with the help of the judges and the viewers, we have been able to cut it down to 100, then
50, 13 and now we present to you two divas- Yeka Onka and Naomi Mac who will be slugging it out for the grand prize” Rotimi Pedro MD of Optima Media Group says
And even though both ladies have their eyes on the grand prize of a recording contract, 7.5Million naira courtesy Etisalat and Royal Exchange, a brand new car courtesy Tom Tom and a Sony entertainment TV center, there is no denying the fact that the ultimate prize is an opportunity to become an international music star, and a proud global ambassador of contemporary Nigerian music.
Who wins this Sunday? Yeka Onka or Naomi Mac?
PROFILE OF FINALISTS
YEKA ONKA
Onyeka Gilbert a.k.a Yeka Onka looks like a model straight from a fashion magazine. Her looks don’t lie because Yeka is indeed a former beauty Queen. She was crowned Queen of Abia at a beauty pageant in 2006. Winning the beauty pageant opened up a lot of doors for her but according to the tall, dark beauty being the Queen of Abia didn’t really pan out well as she expected.
The beauty pageant was an aside for her really. Her real passion in life had always been music. From a tender age, she had been singing with her family band. “My father was the leader of the band and he played the saxophone, guitar and the piano very well. My mum was the
lead vocalist while me, my sisters and my brothers were backups.”
The family band however ‘part-disbanded’ in 2001 at the death of her mother and then fully so at the death of her father 5 years later in 2006. After her parents died, Gospel reggae artiste, Buchi took her under his wings and became her mentor.
Yeka’s confidence was not dented by her orphan state. The word ‘no’ simply does not exist in her dictionary. Rather than accept ‘no’ from the Idol judges at the audition stage, the 26 year old beauty embarked on an ‘Idol mini tour’ that took her from Enugu to Calabar and finally Lagos where she eventually got her ‘Yes’! She says she probably couldn’t have done it alone but for the chance meeting with an Idol crew member after her first rejection in Enugu. The crew member had encouraged her then by saying “it’s not how hard you fall but it’s what you do after you fall”. With that mentality she is giving Nigerian Idol all that she’s got.
NAOMI MAC
Naomi might be the youngest contestant in Nigerian Idol now but her confidence and carriage doesn’t betray her 19 years of age. Born and
raised in Ajegunle (a fact that she is very proud of), the smallish singer bashfully confesses that she has never been to her home state
of Bayelsa. She started singing at age 7 when she and her sisters formed a group.
The group of sisters started singing in their church and later in other churches in other states.“I actually found out that I had a talent, a gift…so I decided to develop and do more with it”, says Naomi, who is the third child of her parents, of why she chose to be a singer. It seems she chose the right path because as the girls’ band success began to increase; their father who was a photojournalist had to quit his job to become his daughters’ road manager. Her mum is a traditional masseuse. On being on Nigerian Idol, she says she “feels great and honoured” to be part of the epic music reality show. “It’s like a dream come true for me.” She tags her most memorable performance as the one where she had to dress like a guy so she could perform an R.Kelly number.
She is currently in a relationship and proudly states that her boyfriend, who she met in church, is the reason behind her success and has watched her perform a number of times during the competition. As of now she worships at The Father’s House and her favourite judge is
Jeffery Daniels because he is “young at heart”.

Paris Hilton finishes probation in Vegas drug case
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Paris Hilton is wrapping up a year of probation stemming from a 2010 drug arrest on the Las Vegas Strip.
Officials say Hilton's attorneys appeared in court Tuesday on the 30-year-old celebrity socialite's behalf to show Hilton had completed her obligations to the court. She had to pay a $2,000 fine and serve 200 hours of community service in addition to probation.
Hilton pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of drug possession and obstructing an officer after police pulled over her and her then-boyfriend on Aug. 26, 2010.
Police say they detected a "vapor trail" of marijuana smoke wafting from the couple's vehicle.
Hilton was arrested when a bag containing 0.8 of a gram of cocaine fell from her purse as she reached for lip balm in front of an officer

Sheen, Warner nearing deal on lawsuit
OS ANGELES (AP) — Former "Two and a Half Men" star Charlie Sheen and the studio that fired him are drawing closer to a deal to end their legal dispute.
According to a person familiar with the talks, Sheen and Warner Bros. were near an agreement but still at work on it Monday. The person was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Calls to Sheen's attorney were not returned. In a statement, the studio said no deal had been reached and declined further comment.
Sheen filed a $100 million lawsuit for wrongful termination against Warner after his firing, which followed bitter public tirades directed at the studio and the show's executive producer.
A judge ordered arbitration in the case, with a status report set for December.
The Los Angeles Times reported that final touches are being put on a deal that would give Sheen about $25 million to settle out of his contract.
Sheen was the highest-paid actor in television, with a per-episode salary reported to be between $1.2 million to $2 million.
His clash with producers cut short last season for the CBS series that is the highest-rated comedy on U.S. television.
"Two and a Half Men" returned to the air Monday with Ashton Kutcher joining the cast as a new character. He plays an Internet billionaire who decides to buy the house that had been owned by Sheen's now-deceased character.
In a recent turnaround, Sheen has been making conciliatory gestures toward his former show.
Appearing at Sunday's Emmy Awards as a presenter, he addressed the "Two and a Half Men" cast and crew, saying, "I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season."
In an interview with Matt Lauer on "Today" last week, the actor known for his hard-partying life said he didn't know how to "put out the fire" when he was fired and began a manic round of media appearances talking about "tiger blood" and "winning."

Paltrow and Winslet show fashion savvy at Emmys
Lea Michele and Julianna Margulies shot for red-carpet fashion heights with their statement gowns at Sunday night's Emmy Awards, but there's something about movie stars that tends to upstage TV stars — even on TV's biggest night.Kate Winslet and her red-as-the-carpet, cap-sleeve Elie Saab seemed the understated, sophisticated look until she flashed the significant cleavage on the bust line, and Gwyneth Paltrow, in a black-sequin number by Emilio Pucci, pulled off a belly baring outfit that would have made the new "Charlie's Angels" trio jealous.
Paltrow topped it off with platinum earrings by Neil Lane that boasted 7 carats of black-and-white diamonds, two platinum and diamond bracelets with a total of 100 carats, and a platinum ring with 5 carats of diamonds and black onyx. That's serious wattage.
Margulies took the biggest risk in a strapless Giorgio Armani Prive gown, with a stiff crescent-shaped bustier and embellished with clear oval stones and shimmery paillettes. It's a look that required confidence — and it's a good thing Margulies, who told E! she picked her dress late last night, has that.
"If you watch the clothes she's worn since coming back to the red carpet with 'The Good Wife,' you'll see she makes incredibly sophisticated choices and she doesn't walk around asking 175 people for their opinions," said InStyle's fashion director, Hal Rubenstein, about Margulies. "She always looks like herself. There's something very grown-up and intelligent about her."
The early online buzz was about Michele's sophisticated Marchesa dress: She wore the look of a seasoned star instead of starlet. She wore a plain-front, low draped back with rosette sleeves that really let her work the crowd. She gave fans lined up outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles a big wink.
If there were trends to emerge from the Emmy red carpet, it was the many red dresses worn by Michele, Nina Dobrev in Donna Karan and Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang, and the straight-from-the-runway electric blue looks. Claire Danes wore a fully beaded strapless gown in bright blue by Oscar de la Renta, Dianna Agron chose a Roksanda Ilincic and Amy Poehler was in a T-shirt-style iridescent dress by Peter Som.
Katie Holmes, one of the last arrivals, wore a blue, silk-crepe dress with a tank top and cinched waist dress designed by Calvin Klein's Francisco Costa, and Christine Baranski did sleek and chic in Zac Posen's midnight-blue, double lapel gown.
Two "Mad Men" sirens opted for sexy, beaded, head-turning looks, with Elisabeth Moss in a second-skin Marchesa and Christina Hendricks in a Johanna Johannsson with an open V-neck. "It was the only dress. I tried it on and it was perfect," Hendricks said.
Rubenstein said all the best gowns were sleek, formfitting ones. "Virtually every single woman who looked good wore a body-conscious dress," he said, ticking off favorites Winslet, Vergara and Julianne Hough in a champagne and light pink, duchess satin strapless gown by Carolina Herrera. Moss hit a personal best as did Julie Bowen in a beaded, silver lame Oscar de la Renta with a plunging neckline, he said, and the surprise was Kristen Wiig, whose deep V-neck copper gown was courtesy of Zac Posen.
"The man makes an amazing gown," Wiig said on the carpet. "I love the cut. It's comfortable and it's different. "
Some stars have been thinking about their outfits for weeks. Sarah Hyland collaborated with Christian Siriano to create her one-shoulder, coral-colored gown with a jeweled waistband. Heidi Klum trusted Siriano, a "Project Runway" alum, to come up with her mushroom-colored strapless gown with a pouffy, asymmetrical hemline.
"I love him. He's just a wonderful person. ... I like to give my designers some props," said Klum, of her "flirty" dress. "It has an old-fashioned feel but it's glamorous."
Zooey Deschanel did a little prom-queen turn in a pink strapless gown with a dropped waist and red ribbon belt.
Minka Kelly, one of those new "Charlie's Angels," is a red-carpet up-and-comer — and that meant she got to wear a navy blue-and-black gown with long lace sleeves and a lace inset at the waist by Dior. Rachael Taylor wore a light pink-and-silver beaded column dress by Armani, and Annie Ilonzeh had on a draped, wine-colored strapless goddess gown by Romona Keveza.
Ceremony hostess Jane Lynch showed a preference for purple — sporting at least three gowns in that shade by David Meister.
A handful of stars did the black thing, with Kaley Cuoco in a one-shoulder gown by Keveza, and Tina Fey in a wool-jersey gown with cap sleeves and an open neck from Tadashi Shoji.
Evan Rachel Woods did black, choosing an all-over beaded boat neck by Elie Saab. Her big bling came from her cuff bracelet, created for her by Fred Leighton, using a 19th-century diamond bow brooch.
Cat Deeley, wearing a metallic strapless Monique Lhuillier gown, wasn't all that eager to give back her $1.4 million in Bulgari jewels.
She told E!'s Ryan Seacrest, "Meet me in Rio tomorrow?"

Gym Clothes Pull Double Duty While Bold Looks Reign Supreme Read more
While we're all gearing up for frigid temperatures and cozy layers, the fashion world is looking ahead to a sunnier time filled with fresh new styles. New York Fashion Week Spring 2012 has just come to an end, leaving us with a fabulous crop of new trends to consider while we endure the colder months.
Starting on September 8th, the weeklong semiannual event featured 300 collections from a wide range of designers that spanned from universally renowned to unknown up and comers.
In case you weren’t able to keep up with all the craziness, we’ve designed a quick crash course spotlighting the key trends that everyone will be rocking from spring (some of these looks can even translate well for fall, talk about being ahead of the curve!)
Sporty-chic
Sportswear had a major moment during Fashion Week, cropping up on a diverse array of runways. Hoodies, mesh, drawstrings, sweats, anoraks, styles you usually reserve for the gym, will serve double duty as daywear come Spring 2012.
The sporty trend was most heavily referenced at Alexander Wang, where we saw a slew of styles inspired by NASCAR and Motorcross, updated and made chic with a dose of Wang’s signature downtown-cool. The boys of Rag & Bone also went in a decidedly sporty direction with track pants, mesh tee-shirts and oversized zip-ups all piled together on the runway for effortlessly cool styles that set a standard for tomboy-chic.
On other runways, the sporty was blended beautifully with the romantic, lady-like styles. At BCBG Max Azria, floaty chiffon dresses in airy shades were topped with contrasting zip-up hoodies. At Marc Jacobs, sweatshirts were teamed with intricately draped skirts for unexpected styles that set a new standard for casual-cool.
And while she was once known as Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham seemed to have drawn from inspiration from Sporty Spice for her collection, which featured boxy, hooded jackets and dresses with insets of sheer mesh, which was also a popular fabric on the runways this season.
Sweetly Slouchy
Spring 2012 runways were full of comfortable shapes that float in the breeze and move beautifully with every motion.
At DKNY, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Jill Stuart, BCBG Max Azria and countless others, we saw airy dresses that are made to hang loose for romantic styles with an ethereal quality. It wasn’t only the dresses, though: tops, skirts, jackets, pant—comfort proved to be key styles.
While skinny pants will stick around for spring, slouchy pant styles, from relaxed trousers to super wide legs have proved to be a much more fashionable (and forgiving!) alternative on the runways and is emerging as one of the standout trends. To keep things slouchy without looking sloppy, take a cue from Elie Tahari or DKNY and combine fitted, more structured pieces with your free-flowing ones.
Explosive Prints
Pretty prints are always key players when it comes to spring fashion. This season, the stakes have been raised and prints have gone from pretty to power-packed.
Florals are always a la mode for spring. This time around, dainty florals have been toughened up, appearing on the runways of Cynthia Rowley and Diane von Furstenberg in rich, electric shades that make a statement.
DKNY showcased a model wearing a single wild print from head-to-toe, literally, with a hat, top, pant, bag and shoe all in the same crazy pattern. If wearing a single print from top to bottom is way too matchy-matchy for you, take a cue from Karen Walker, Suno and DVF and mix several prints together—stripes, florals, dots, even, dare we say it, stripes and plaids. The rules of matching are officially obsolete so go wild!
Pops of Neon
The neon trend is nothing new and has been cropping up for several seasons. While in-your-face neons are still going strong, more subdued flashes of neon are emerging as the new way to bring bold colors into your look.
At Rachel Roy, a beautiful cream-colored suit was accented with hot pink ties, adding just enough pop without looking out of place. At BCBG Max Azria, sweet dresses in nude shades were outlined with stripes of neon, ranging from chunky to barely visible. Pops or neon orange were sprinkled throughout the Rag & Bone collection in doses big and small: a neon swimsuit under a sheer top, a neon bag to accent a quietly colored look, a neon drawstring peeping out beneath a dark knit.
The lesson here was go bright, only do so in moderation!
White Hot
This spring is going to be white-hot thanks to a takeover of LWDs (little white dresses). White dresses found their way onto nearly every runway this season and with so many interpretations by so many talented designers, there is sure to be a LWD with your name on it come spring. (It’s a good thing we have a while, you can star practicing how to avoid spills in the meantime!).
White wasn’t only for dresses. We saw beautiful layered looks made up of white separates from head-to-toe at Ralph Lauren, Altuzarra and Rachel Roy. Even at shows where looks weren’t styled to be full on white-outs, there were plenty of fun and fresh white pieces for choose from.

Porn company builds porn bunker to ride out forecasted
Debbie Does End of Days”?
San Fernando Valley porn purveyors Pink Visual may be the only adult film company equipped to release such a title, as they are planning on “riding out the 2012 apocalypse in style” by building an “enormous underground bunker” in anticipation of the December 21, 2012 apocalypse.
“Our goal is nothing less than to survive the apocalypse to come in comfort and luxury,” Pink Visual spokesman Quentin Boyer told CBS’ Los Angeles affiliate. “Whether that catastrophe takes the form of fireballs flung earthward by an all-seeing deity, extended torrential rainfall, Biblical rapture, an earthquake-driven mega-tsunami, radioactive flesh-eating zombies, or some combination of the above.”
Boyer told the LA Weekly that the X-rated bunker will be filled with “multiple fully-stocked bars, an enormous performing stage, and a sophisticated content production studio.”
With nothing to lose on that fateful night, Boyer suggests that those invited to the bunker may participate in an end of the world orgy. “Inevitably, I suppose, that will happen,” he muses. “It’s hard to say how people would respond to an actual apocalypse.”
Pink Visual’s guest list will be limited 1,500 VIPs said Boyer, adding that “Pink Visual performers, active site members and Twitter followers (will get) priority over the general public.”
Good thing they have over a year to plan for the event, as Boyer admits that they’re “still working on oxygen, that kind of thing.”
The exact location of the bunker has not been released due to “security concerns.”
And hey–there are worse places than Van Nuys to spend your last hours on earth. “If nothing else, it’ll be a fantastic one-night party, after which we’ll emerge from underground, red-faced, to go home, and the company will be left behind with the coolest bunker known to man,” Boyer said.
